22 times.

Twenty two frekkin times.

That is how many times today's subject of discussion has been arrested for DUI, his latest happening in New Mexico this past Monday.

He is 51 years old. Let's say for argument's sake that he got his first DUI at age 21. I have no idea if that's the case or not. It could have been earlier, it could have been later. But if that was the case, this works out to a DUI every year and four months.

His BAC level was .393 - nearly 5 times the legal limit, and a level that many experts assert, in most people, could induce a coma and even kill. This guy, while clearly impaired, was functional enough that the arresting officer saw fit to conduct a field sobriety test. He failed, obviously, but the fact that he was functional enough to leave even a slight question of whether he was impaired past the .08 legal limit is disturbing.

Then there's the question of how he was out walking freely among us, let alone behind the wheel. In some cases, you can do jail time on a first offense. In many states, a second offense will put you behind bars for at least a few months to a year. Most states will put you away for several years on a third offense. I'd think by the 15th or so, you'd be racking up at least a decade or two. One thing he did have going for him, however, was that two of these 21 previous cases were still pending, so really, only 19 had been settled. I do not know how many of the 19 cases resulted in conviction.

But seriously, if you've got a suspended license and two DUI cases pending, and I'm assuming no insurance, what the hell are you doing behind the wheel of a car? And whose car was it? If he had two recent arrests, if he did own a car, it was probably impounded still from one of those arrests, and I can't imagine that he'd have an easy time buying a car with no license or insurance.

So anyhow, let's hope this guy is put away for a long time, and maybe give him some kind of treatment for alcohol abuse while you're at it. The slaps on the wrist he's been getting for the past 30 or so years are obviously not getting through to him.
